Oxford Brookes Historian Dr Glen O’Hara has contributed one of his regular pieces for The Independent dissecting Education Secretary Michael Gove’s new English Baccalaurate Certificates, which will be taken by English students at the age of sixteen.
Dr O’Hara argues that the destruction of GCSEs is a ‘tragedy’ that only exposes the ideological, rather than practical, objectives of this ‘reform’. The new qualifications, he writes, “will privilege the night-before swotters, those with good memories, the crisis-managers and the highly opinionated – people, in fact, who act and sound like members of the present Cabinet.”
