Oxford Brookes’ annual festival at Pegasus Theatre, this year entitled OutBurst, is again set to thrill audiences with cutting-edge research showcases and events.
The week-long festival is now in its third year and sees the theatre’s main Philip Pullman stage, as well as the café, corridors, studio, garden and dressing rooms, filled with performances or interactive events for visitors. Some of the activities are free and are suitable for all ages.
One of the most eagerly anticipated events of the week will be the writing showcase where Creative Writing MA students read their work at an evening hosted by Kate Clanchy. The Oxford Brookes Creative Writing Fellow is author of Meeting the English which was shortlisted for the 2014 Costa Awards.
Shortly after appearing at the Pegasus festival in 2012 to read out her work, Helen Eve won a two-book publishing deal. She said: “The creative writing showcase was the first time I’d read my work in public, and it was a great experience…tutors from the course were present, as well as literary agents and some of the creative writing fellows, including Philip Pullman and Kate Clanchy.
“I had very positive feedback from the audience and the tutors. Philip Pullman was particularly encouraging, and this gave me the confidence to submit my novel to literary agent Claire Wilson at Rogers, Coleridge and White.”
Eleanor Lowe, OutBurst co-organiser, said: “OutBurst brings Oxford Brookes into the heart of the community to engage people of all ages with the wonder of discovery and the arts and sciences.
“Whether people want to try and spot the literary stars of tomorrow, listen to talks by the University’s world-leading researchers or write haiku poetry in the peace of the Pegasus garden, our aim is to inspire and entertain.”
OutBurst takes place at Pegasus Theatre, Magdalen Road, Oxford, OX4 1RE from Tuesday 6 May to Saturday 10 May. Tickets for events are available from the Pegasus Box Office on 01865 812150 (Tuesday-Friday, 12 noon – 6.00pm, Saturday 10.00am – 6.00pm) or online.
